Love this idea, absolutely in!

My entry into last year's LOTR category at Warhammer Fest.
Pleased I managed a finalist pin, it was an extremely difficult category this year.
I think the palette didn't help me - while I was trying to keep true to the film and match the colours of the scenery and character, it was too drab. If I was doing it again i'd include some pop of a contrasting colour or saturate the tones a bit more to exaggerate it slightly.
Think I was most happy with the spilled box of salt on the ground, representing Sam's loss of innocence from this point of the journey onwards  ;D ::)
I did managed to win the Lord of the Rings Warhammer Community painting competition with it though, and even got a nod from the actor Sean Astin for it on twitter

Finished projects / Finalist Warhammer Fest Bloodbowl Duel 2018
« on: October 02, 2018, 02:52:59 pm »
A few photos of my finalist pin winning entry into this year's duel category at warhammer fest. Had a lot of fun playing around with the posing on these guys.
Wanted to capitalise on the smug grin on the elf's face and the angry grimace on the dwarf's - think it's safe to say a grudge was added after this "manouvre"
Also wanted to try and convey the sense that it was taking place on a dwarven pitch, hence the marble with gold inlay.
This was rushed a bit before the deadline, so a few finishes are slightly rougher than I would have liked. But having said that it was a fun piece to work on and I learned a lot doing it :)
C&C welcome as always

Work in progress / Re: Mamikon's WIP's

love the feel of this piece, can't wait to see the finished product.
What are you planning for the escape pod? Will it have the clear plastic view port still inserted or will it be "smashed" out?

Would love to see this in Golden Demon or Armies on Parade and see how it's received. It's a gorgeous piece dude. It hurts my brain looking at it - but in a good way! :P

Advice / Re: How to win a Golden Demon or die trying (getting finalists)!

Completely agree on having a background or story to your piece. We have a huge range of fantastic lore and background to help ground our entries. The judges are just as into this as we are - give them something they can geek out to! Simple things like having a model with a certain livery to help you understand when or where the piece is set. Having a space wolf on thunderwolf mount with Harald Deathwolf's great company sigil is a simple example.
Chances are if you can think of something like that and know of some lore to back it up the judges do too!

Advice / Re: Bases and transport
« on: September 26, 2018, 01:04:41 pm »
I usually fly over to the GD at Warhammer Fest in May, so i'm always conscious of transporting models and the size I can manage on the plane.

Usually my models base is incorporated into the base provided with the model, and I've a small carriage clock box that has some really soft foam I use to secure it in place for the journey.

In terms of plinths I think it does help grab your initial attention but you don't want it overpowering the model. If the model and base only sit on the plinth I'd advise magnetising or at least blue-tac it to the plinth - the judges might not realise it's not secured and then whoops, there goes all your hard work! :'(

Finished projects / Bronze GD 2017 - Laketown Militia Captain

After 4 previous attempts and 15 years in the hobby I managed to snag my first Daemon with this guy :)
Had a lot of fun working up the various textures on this guy. The face was a bit of a challenge, still an area I need to practice and improve on.
The base was a bit rough but I was pleased overall, somewhat added to the overall feel of the piece.
